LEGO® is no longer offering the Monthly Mini-Build program in stores, with December 2020 being the last month it was available, though at publish time it is not entirely clear from the official Monthly Mini-Build page whether or not it will be returning once the pandemic eases enough to allow stores to reopen.

The Monthly Mini-Build program was beloved by many, for many reasons. For one, it was an easy entry for younger builders, as well as free parts for the collectors among us. We salute the Monthly Mini-Build program with this series of animated instructions videos.

We picked up this LEGO® Classic 3-in-1 set to build with the littles, and couldn’t resist putting together ourselves first. I wish the helicopter used more of the parts, but otherwise this one was much fun, and turns out it was designed by Tiago Catarino, whose YouTube channel we have been enjoying a lot lately.

We recently grabbed this LEGO® Harry Potter set in a birthday haul, and we couldn’t be happier with it! We’ve always loved owls, and Hedwig is one of the more striking icons of the Wizarding World. The build was a joy, with a number of interesting techniques, and the movement of the wings when cranked mimics the real-world motion of flapping in flight quite nicely.

Recreated based on Bricklink images and part list.

This set was part of the inspiration for Brickingham, and the first LEGO® model we ever modified ourselves. You see, the Vulcan statue that this set commemorates has a (ahem) rather famous distinguishing feature that the original model did not incorporate. We corrected that oversight. Sadly, the LEGO® Store this set was created for has since closed, which is what prompted us to create the first of these animated instruction videos, and set us on the path to Brickingham!
